The Rapelje Monument

In the back corner of the cemetery along the ravine stands a stone that looks like a bench or small table, now very hard to read. This is the oldest grave in the churchyard. Daniel Rapelje, the original owner of this land, buried two sons here in 1819 — there was no churchyard at the time, so he chose the most beautiful spot on his property. He later donated the land so they could rest in consecrated ground. The bench stone records the burials of six family members.
